Edition III of The Silent Traveller takes the form of a soft reader’s suit set, built for travel, play, for writing and reading and pottering in. Inspired by my own recent travels in rural Japan and by Chiang Yee’s enchanting book, The Silent Traveller in Japan (1972, W. W. Norton & Company, Inc.). Each set is made-to-order. I work with two patterns - one for men and one for women, with subtle differences in the cut and details. Edition III is made from an incredibly soft organic cotton moleskin, which can be worn just out of the tumble dryer, or on repeat with soft creases imprinted like old suede, or in a formal, crisp way after ironing. Sets are built for waking and throwing on, for travel and everyday wear — a uniform to do one’s best work in. The set’s moleskin is sourced from the last remaining heritage textile mill in England, specialising in the production and dying of moleskin and corduroy. An unusual fine shirting-weight moleskin gives shirt and trouser a relaxed, soft drape. Dark brown horn buttons made in Yorkshire come with the set. Each set is made in my studio using traditional sewing methods, complete with an embroidered dustbag, wrapped with handmade paper, & nestled in an archival box. International tracked shipping is included. Upon selecting your colour and ordering a set, a simple form to take your size requirements and ideal fit for the shirt + trouser will be emailed to you. From there, I will send you a drawing of your set in progress, and it will arrive three weeks later wrapped and ready for the years to come.

Mr. Yee describes customs and rituals, dress and language, poetry and drama, painting and sculpture, kites and carp, trees and flowers — all is revealed in his inimitable text and delightful drawings. The book reveals the subtle nuances of daily life and habits in both urban and secluded corners of Japan. Chiang Yee’s charming humour, keen observations, and poetic use of language make this one of the most special and relatively little-known books on Japan. As Sir Herbert Read observed, Chiang Yee “is one of those rare travellers who help us understand ourselves. He writes simply and clearly about matters which are subtle and difficult to understand…and has greatly extended our knowledge not only of Chinese civilisation but of art and civilisation in general.”
